Where to Do Stand-Up Paddleboarding in American Samoa

The placid waters of the Pacific's deepest and largest natural harbour just happen to be an awesome place for some stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). But where else can you do some stand-up paddleboarding in American Samoa LINK#TT038?

The rest of American Samoa can be quite challenging for paddleboarding. During the dry season (May to October), tradewinds really batter the coastlines, making SUP more of a workout than the peaceful glide you're probably after (unless you're keen on some surf action, of course).

That said, don't write off the outer islands completely. Some accommodations on Ofu-Olosega do have SUP boards available, and when conditions are right, you can make the most of the stunning lagoon just off their incredible beach.

5 Tips for Paddleboarding in American Samoa

  1. On Tutuila, Stick to Pago Pago Harbor Waters - We've found the harbour to be perfectly safe for paddleboarding, and you'll be treated to stunning views of the towering mountain ranges that frame the coastline. It's the ideal spot for beginners and experienced paddlers alike.
  2. Make It a Snorkelling Adventure - Rent some snorkel gear and paddle out towards the point along the coral reef. The reef here is absolutely spectacular, offering some of the best snorkelling opportunities we've experienced in American Samoa.
  3. Time It Right - First, SPW runs Monday through Friday. Second, morning sessions are when the water conditions are typically much calmer.
  4. Don't Underestimate the Sun - The tropical location combined with the reflection off the water creates intense UV exposure that can catch you off guard. Proper sun protection isn't just recommended – it's essential.
  5. Stay Safe and Hydrated - The tropical climate means you'll need to drink more water than usual, especially when you're active on the water. Always let someone know your paddleboarding plans and when you expect to return – it's a simple safety measure that gives everyone peace of mind.

Paddleboarding with South Pacific Watersports (SPW)

If you're looking to explore American Samoa's waters from a different perspective, South Pacific Watersports offers stand-up paddleboard rentals at an hourly, half-day and full-day rate.

Location and Recommendations

This local operation is perfectly positioned on the Pago Pago Harbor in Utulei along the main road near Sadie's by the Sea.

Their base is well-positioned for exploring one of the world's largest natural harbours, which makes perfect sense for both beginners and experienced paddlers alike.

They also offer snorkel gear along with your paddleboard, so that you can head out to a coral reef not too far from base. With paddleboards equipped with a leash, you can safely jump into the water with your snorkel gear and explore the reef line below.

According to locals, the coral reef there is absolutely awesome, and turtle spotting is practically guaranteed. In fact, the owners have told us that they spot turtles just by looking from their porch!

It's important to note that you can't take rental gear away from the Pago Pago Harbor. This is not a freedom hire to pack up and take wherever you want.

Paddleboarding at Va'oto Lodge

Paddleboarding at Va'oto Lodge offers guests an incredible way to explore the turquoise lagoon surrounding Ofu Island in the Manu'a Islands LINK#D012. The lodge provides one complimentary paddleboard for guests to use, along with a kayak and snorkelling gear, making it easy to dive into aquatic adventures without any additional cost.

Location and Recommendations

Located on the edge of a protected marine reserve, the waters around Va'oto Lodge are teeming with vibrant coral formations and diverse fish life. According to locals, the best time to paddle is during mid-tide when water levels are ideal, as low tide leaves the lagoon too shallow, while high tide brings strong currents that can be challenging for paddlers.

For the most enjoyable experience, we recommend heading out in the morning when conditions are typically calmer. The wet season, from November to April, offers the most favourable paddleboarding conditions with gentler winds and smoother waters.
