What Services are Available in American Samoa?
Planning a trip to American Samoa and wondering what shops and services you'll find once you arrive?
Here's the thing: your experience will vary dramatically depending on which island you're visiting. On Tutuila, you'll be pleasantly surprised to find plenty of familiar brands and services from the US mainland (we're talking everything from major grocery chains to recognisable fast-food outlets).
The Manu'a Islands, however, are a completely different story. These remote gems offer a much more authentic Polynesian experience, but that means significantly fewer modern conveniences.
From what we've experienced, it's worth planning ahead based on where you're headed. Check out The Complete Travel Guide to American Samoa LINK#TT038 to learn more about each destination, or scroll down to discover exactly what infrastructure and services await you across the territory.

Food and Groceries in American Samoa
American Samoa offers diverse grocery shopping options across its islands. Tutuila is home to some of American Samoa's largest supermarkets, with convenience stores every few hundred feet or so to ensure you can grab some essentials when you need them.
The Manu'a Islands have a smaller number of family-run convenience stores selling a range of tinned goods, basic staples and limited fresh produce when available from local gardens. Although many supermarkets are closed on Sunday, some smaller convenience stores may still be open.
Supermarkets
Pago Pago and Tutuila are home to American supermarket chains where you'll find the most variety when it comes to food staples and imported goods. Opening hours are typically from 6 am to 8 pm or 7 am to 9 pm Monday to Sunday. Some stores like KS Mart close Sunday. The largest supermarkets are as follows:
- Cost-U-Less, Tafuna, Tutuila
- KS Mart, Tafuna, Tutuila
- TSM Mart, Tafuna, Tutuila
- Forsgren's, Nu'uuli, Tutuila
Due to infrequent shipping to the remote Manu'a Islands and the challenges of freight costs, there's often limited variety and higher prices than you might expect on the main island of Tutuila, so it's best to approach grocery shopping with flexibility and patience.
Convenience Stores
Tutuila has an abundance of convenience stores, which are usually easily identifiable by the shop name sign printed in bold along with logos for Bluesky or similar. Locally run stores are typically open from 7 am to 8 pm or 8 am to 9 pm Monday to Saturday, whilst Chinese-run stores are open from 5 am to 12 am Monday to Sunday.
A rule of thumb is that there is a convenience store well-stocked with food essentials. A non-comprehensive list of convenience stores in Tutuila includes:
- H&L Mart, Nu'uuli, Tutuila
- H&L Mart 2, Nu'uuli, Tutuila
- 5&2 Shop, Pago Pago Airport, Tafuna, Tutuila
- Fagatogo Mart, Fagatogo, Tutuila
- Family Mart, Nu'uuli, Tutuila
- Fagaima Mart, Faga'itua, Tutuila
- Kui Mart, Tafuna, Tutuila
- Tafuna Mini Mart, Tafuna, Tutuila
- Malaeimi Mart, Malaeimi, Tutuila
- P&F Incorporated, 'Ili'ili, Tutuila
- Pelene's Supermarket, Pava'ia'i, Tutuila
Some of the convenience stores in the Manu'a Islands include:
- DBA Ahsoon's Mini Mart, Faleasao, Ta'ū, Manu'a Islands

- Fitiuta Lodge Shop, Fitiuta, Ta'ū, Manu'a Islands

Markets and Roadside Stalls
When it comes to fruit and vegetables, you have even more options in Tutuila. Roadside stalls usually stock a small variety of fruit and vegetables, usually found along the main road (Route 001) between Pava'ia'i and Nu'uuli. Needless to say, these vendors only accept cash.
On the other hand, the largest gatherings of fruit and vegetables in Pago Pago can be found at the Fagatogo Market, located in Fagatogo near the bus station.
Markets are typically open from 5:30 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday and 4 am to 4 pm Saturday.
Restaurants
Unsurprisingly, there are tens of cafés, restaurants and takeaways across Pago Pago and Tutuila to make for an easy meal. We have listed some of our favourite eateries in The 10 Best Restaurants in Pago Pago & Tutuila.
There are no restaurants in the Manu'a Islands.
Manu'a Guest Accommodation Provisions
Note that guests of Va'oto Lodge have a pantry and fridge stocked with a variety of food and drink, most of which are at a similar price to what you'll find at the convenience stores. They work using an honesty system.
For more detailed information, especially on how to navigate dining in the Manu'a Islands, where there are no restaurants, learn more in The Food Guide to the Manu'a Islands: Places to Eat & Food Tours.

Medication, Toiletries and Pharmaceuticals
While we always recommend having all the medication you need with you for your stay in American Samoa (see What Medication to Pack in Your First Aid Kit for American Samoa for advice), if there is anything you end up needing, you have different options depending on which island you're visiting.
Medication at Supermarkets and Convenience Stores
Light medications (like painkillers), baby products, feminine hygiene products and toiletries are sold in supermarkets and convenience stores in Pago Pago on Tutuila, as listed in the "Food and Groceries" section above.
In the Manu'a Islands, some light medication and toiletries are for sale at the islands' convenience stores, but the stock is limited, and they are sometimes sold out. We especially recommend bringing even light medications (such as painkillers), hayfever medication, baby products, hygiene products and sun protection to the Manu'a Islands.
Pharmacies
Government-managed and independent pharmacies can be found across Pago Pago on Tutuila and tend to be open 24/7 by the hospital and from 8 am to 6 pm, Monday to Saturday elsewhere.
The pharmacy with the widest range of goods is LBJ Tropical Medical Center Pharmacy, while Fagaalu Pharmacy and Tafuna Pharmacy have more branches that may be more convenient.
- LBJ Tropical Medical Center Pharmacy, Route 104, Faga'alu, Tutuila (main hospital)
- Tafuna Family Health Center Pharmacy, Route 117, Tafuna, Tutuila
- Drug Store, Route 001, Faga'alu, Tutuila
- Drug Store, Forsgren's Shopping Center, Route 001, Nu'uuli, Tutuila
There is no pharmacy available in the Manu'a Islands, so visitors are advised to bring any necessary medications with them.
Medical Centres and Hospitals
Pago Pago and American Samoa's main hospital is LBJ Tropical Medical Center at Faga'alu, which offers specialist services, surgery and outpatient clinics. The hospital is open 24/7.
There are also outlying medical centres around Tutuila and the Manu'a Islands offering basic services and facilities. Independent medical centres/clinics are usually open from 8 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday.
- LBJ Tropical Medical Center, Route 104, Faga'alu, Tutuila (main hospital)
- Tafuna Family Health Center, Route 117, Tafuna, Tutuila
- Saelua Medical Corporation, 5799 Tafuna Industrial Park, Tafuna, Tutuila
- Leone Clinic, Route 004, Leone, Tutuila
- Faga'alu Clinic, Faga'alu, Tutuila

Fuel Stations in the Manu'a Islands
Fuel availability is very limited across the Manu'a Islands:
- Ofu Gas Station (Near wharf, Ofu, Manu'a Islands, open Wednesdays only) - The only fuel station operates on a very restricted schedule, so visitors should plan fuel needs carefully and consider filling up on Tutuila before travelling.
Given the limited operating hours and remote location, accommodation hosts don't typically expect to refill the vehicle. However, offering to directly pay the vehicle owner for gas is usually the best course of action.

Communication Services in American Samoa
When it comes to staying connected, American Samoa's phone networks provide the most reliable and convenient option. Otherwise, you may have to pay for an internet connection in accommodations and internet cafés. There is also a post office in Pago Pago.
Phone Networks
There are two network providers in American Samoa, ASTCA and Bluesky, which have branches in the following locations:
- ASTCA Central Office – Route 106, Tafuna, Tutuila
- ASTCA – Nu'uuli, Tutuila (across the road from the Laufou Shopping Center and Carls Jr.)
- Bluesky Nu'uuli – Laufou Shopping Center, Nu'uuli, Tutuila
These stores are typically open from 8 am to 5 pm on weekdays, while Bluesky is also open from 9 am to 2 pm on Saturdays. Otherwise, most convenience stores offer e-charge top-ups for at least one of American Samoa's phone networks.

Post Office
Pago Pago has one main post office in its city centre run by the United States Postal Service (1 Lumanai Building on Route 001, Tutuila opposite the Jean P. Haydon Museum). Services include postage stamps, domestic and international mail, passport photos, money orders and more.
There are also post offices on Olosega and Ta'ū, though you'll have to ask locals where they are, as they're well hidden.
Opening hours are typically from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday and 8:30 am to 12 pm Saturday.
Internet and WiFi
Free access to internet and WiFi is limited across American Samoa, mostly offered by hotels and accommodations. Due to the limited WiFi options, we recommend getting a local SIM card and using a data plan as the most reliable and cost-effective way to access the internet. Otherwise, WiFi options include:
- American Samoa Visitors Bureau, Fagatogo, Tutuila (free WiFi)
- Ruby Red Café, Tafuna, Tutuila (free WiFi)
- Manuatele Ferry, Pago Pago-Manu'a, Tutuila (free WiFi)
- Departure Lounge Pago Pago Airport, Tafuna, Tutuila (free WiFi)
- Sadie's by the Sea, Utulei, Tutuila (free WiFi for guests; paid for visitors)

It's worth noting that ASTCA offers the best coverage in the Manu'a Islands. Bluesky doesn't work at all in Fitiuta and Olosega.
