How to Travel Around Samoa

Only a small cluster of five islands in the Pacific Ocean yet boasting limited transport options, American Samoa LINK#TT038 requires careful planning to travel around.

Getting to this remote piece of paradise, however, is perhaps the biggest hurdle unless you're coming from one of the nearby South Pacific travel hubs. But once you're here, there's certainly scope to travel the islands to your preferred style, from hiking to riding the local 'aiga buses.

Let's start with how you get to American Samoa. Most travellers get here by international flight.

The vast majority of international flights in American Samoa arrive at Pago Pago International Airport (PPG), located approximately a 10-minute drive from Pago Pago and conveniently positioned in the heart of Tutuila.

International flights depart from Honolulu, taking around five and a half hours. Flights are also available from neighbouring Samoa, which has connections to New Zealand and Australia. Note that before arrival, you will need to apply for your Entry Permit and, one that trips many travellers, provide evidence of your accommodation booking. Find out more about the paperwork you'll need to prepare in our guide, What Documents Do I Need to Travel to American Samoa?

2. Airport and Accommodation Transfers - The Easiest Airport Pick-Up Transport

A simple way to get between Pago Pago International Airport and your accommodation, or between the Manu'a Island airstrips and your accommodation, is to book a transfer with your accommodation provider.

While some hotels and lodges tend to offer airport transfers, they might not always be included in your rate, so be sure to ask.

Needless to say, airport transfers should be arranged with your chosen accommodation prior to arrival.

It couldn't be easier to get between American Samoa's main islands, Tutuila and Manu'a Islands (which include Ofu, Olosega and Ta'ū), thanks to the inter-island flight services operating regularly!

Regular ferry services operate frequently between Tutuila and the Manu'a Islands, while smaller boat transfers run between Tutuila and Aunu'u Island (more on that below).

There's even a weekly service to the nearby nation of Samoa, with ferries departing from Pago Pago Harbour once or twice a week, arriving at Apia Harbour on Upolu.

A popular and convenient way to travel around Tutuila, Ofu-Olosega and Ta'ū at your own pace is by renting a car.

There is a decent selection of car rental companies on Tutuila - all based in Pago Pago. On the outer islands, they take the much more casual approach of accommodation providers having one or two vehicles available for guests to rent.

Either way, be sure to do your research using the 10 Best Car Rentals in American Samoa LINK#T007.

While most visitors will only need a 2WD to enjoy American Samoa's attractions, note that there are a rare few places that require a 4WD vehicle.

Only available on Tutuila and with no real schedule, buses should only be considered as a transport option if you have the time to take it easy.

Buses operate from the Fagatogo Market, and there are options to travel to both the east and west coasts of the island.

Note that there are no bus services in the Manu'a Islands.

Although they operate on government-regulated fares, they are more expensive than buses or renting a car for the day.

Your accommodation provider on Tutuila should be able to get in touch with the nearest one.
