This American territory in the South Pacific captivates visitors with its dramatic landscapes, from towering volcanic peaks to pristine coral reefs, all whilst maintaining its authentic Polynesian culture and the legendary warmth of Samoan hospitality. All you have to do is find a place to stay in American Samoa...

Where to Stay: Pago Pago and Tutuila

This is the South Pacific escape you envisioned: white sand beaches and swaying coconut palms. What's more, this is also likely why you chose American Samoa: lush tropical jungles and dramatic jutting peaks scattered with waterfalls (and National Park trails to discover them all!)
The capital of American Samoa is a bustling hub with almost all of Tutuila's accommodations located here. From what we've personally experienced, what Pago Pago lacks in tranquillity and dreamy beaches, it more than makes up for in culture, dining and awe-inspiring views of one of the world's largest natural harbours.
Pago Pago is located on the south central shores of Tutuila, surrounding a dramatic harbour and backed by the lush peaks of Rainmaker Mountain. There are markets, museums and picturesque parks to keep you occupied in the city.
The greater island of Tutuila provides all of that and more, easily accessible from Pago Pago, but also with the odd accommodation should you want to get away from the hustle and bustle.
With that, tourism infrastructure is developing in comparison to its neighbouring nations, with an interesting but at least not overwhelming choice of international-style hotels, locally-run B&Bs and even a unique eco-fale of its own.
Tutuila's attractions are scattered across the island, meaning you'll likely need to hire a car, take a day tour or ride on the colourful buses to get to its iconic national park, waterfalls, beaches and cultural sites.

1.Sadie's By The Sea

If you're seeking that resort-style stay in American Samoa, even with a tiny bit of beachfront, book a stay at Sadie's By The Sea.
The private beach offers endless entertainment with complimentary kayaks, sailboats and water sports equipment, while the restaurant seating positioned just above the sand provides the perfect spot to dine with ocean views.
Centrally located within walking distance of Pago Pago dock, restaurants and government offices, you'll find easy access to everything Pago Pago has to offer.
Across 40 well-appointed rooms, configurations include two queen beds, queen plus single bed combinations, and king bed options, with four "King Deluxe" rooms featuring extended lounge areas and futons for extra space.
Goat Island Café serves as the resort's popular dining destination, offering breakfast, lunch and dinner in an open-air setting that captures the tropical atmosphere.
Beyond the beach activities, guests can enjoy the outdoor pool and take advantage of the on-site convention centre for events.

2.Tisa's Eco Fales

Not only is Tisa's Eco Fales the only accommodation on Tutuila not tucked within the Pago Pago Harbour - located on Alega Beach, but it is also one of the most unique places to stay.
As the only Samoan-style fale in American Samoa, the lodge offers an upmarket twist on traditional accommodation with real beds, table and chairs, driftwood and nautical décor, plus plenty of space to unwind.
This eco-fale sits directly on the beach, providing intimate access to nature while your gracious hosts, Tisa and CandyMann, are real characters offering unmatched hospitality.
Accommodating up to four guests with a minimum two-night stay, your experience includes healthy (and plentiful) meals for breakfast and dinner. On-site, you'll find Tisa's Barefoot Bar – a must-visit destination whether you're staying here or not.
Join their island tours and eco-experiences, like the Alega Marine Sanctuary snorkelling tour, or simply enjoy spending time at one of the country's best beach accommodations, just a 15-minute drive from Pago Pago town.
With only two fales available, needless to say, we recommend booking as far in advance as possible.

3.Sadie Thompson Inn

You're right in thinking this accommodation is related to Sadie's By The Sea. In contrast, Sadie Thompson Inn evokes colonial charm within a timber building overlooking Pago Pago Harbour.
Named after the fictional protagonist from W. Somerset Maugham's short story "Rain" (1921), this historic two-storey inn welcomed the famous author himself back in 1916.
Today, you'll find various room configurations to suit different needs. Standard rooms feature either one king bed plus futon or two queen beds, whilst harbour view rooms offer a king bed with extended lounge area and scenic street and harbour vistas. For those seeking more space, apartment-style rooms provide a full kitchen alongside a large living and dining area.
We love unwinding in the air-conditioned bar, complete with pool table and great music. Sadie's Restaurant specialises in American favourites like steak and seafood served in a charming colonial setting.
Overlooking Pago Pago Harbour, the inn provides complimentary shuttle transport to and from Pago Pago International Airport for guests travelling on Hawaiian Airlines, with rental cars also available for hire.
4.Tradewinds Hotel

A top name in the accommodation scene of Pago Pago, and all of American Samoa for that matter, Tradewinds Hotel provides optimum convenience and comfort near the airport.
You'll find this is American Samoa's largest and most comprehensive hotel. The four room and suite types all feature Balinese-inspired furnishings rather than traditional Samoan décor, which gives the place a unique tropical feel.
Every room comes with an ensuite, and here's what we love most—guests get free airport transfers and complimentary continental breakfast. This adds serious value, especially if you're on a short stay or dealing with a layover.
The hotel features solid conference facilities, plus there's a swimming pool for when you need some downtime.
For dining, you'll want to check out the on-site Equator Bar & Restaurant, which serves up American-style favourites (think burgers and grilled mains). Don't miss their traditional umu nights though, which is a great chance to taste authentic island cooking.
The location is ultra-convenient, just moments from Pago Pago International Airport.
5.Moana O Sina

For a change of pace, Moana O Sina offers an upscale B&B stay on the coast of Tafuna.
This charming bed and breakfast offers the perfect mix of Western comfort and Polynesian charm, with homely rooms featuring French doors and timber furniture set within lush tropical gardens. The standout feature is undoubtedly the swimming pool positioned right on the coast's edge, allowing you to watch the waves roll in while you take a refreshing dip.
Ocean views are spectacular from every angle, while the spacious accommodations provide a welcoming retreat after days of island exploration. A complimentary continental breakfast is served daily (except Sundays, when you'll be given a breakfast voucher for a local cafe instead) in the waterfront breakfast fale, and for special dining occasions, you can enjoy meals in the modern twist of an open-air Samoan fale.
Meanwhile, the complimentary WiFi keeps you connected when needed.
Ideal for solo travellers, couples and families seeking a more peaceful retreat in the Pago Pago area, Moana O Sina is the ultimate choice for relaxation.

6.Maliu Mai Beach Resort

Just along the coast from Moana O Sina, Maliu Mai Beach Resort is a charming locally-run resort enticing travellers with its rock pool swimming pool and its popular restaurant.
This charming accommodation sits uniquely tucked between the runway and the coast.
Run by a welcoming local American Samoan family, the property showcases intriguing Greek-inspired pillar architecture that's been lovingly restored through gradual renovations over the years.
While the shoreline is mostly rocky rather than sandy beach, the spectacular sea views from your oceanview room more than make up for it. And instead of your average swimming pool, they have a true Samoan-style sheltered rock pool built into the cliffs.
The real magic happens in the spacious dining hall and especially out on the deck, where the lively bar service truly makes this place shine. This is also where you'll be able to connect to the hotel's WiFi.
Whether you're travelling for business or pleasure, Maliu Mai will ensure you're well looked after in American Samoa.

Where to Stay: Manu'a Islands

Humble, traditional and breathtakingly beautiful, the Manu'a Islands are American Samoa's most remote island group and provide a true sense of the South Pacific.
Far from spoiled and touristy, the islands only have a couple of lodges: one on the bridge-connected Ofu and Olosega Islands and the other on the east coast of Ta'ū. Here, you'll experience American Samoan hospitality in all its authenticity, for the good and for the not-so-polished.
Some of American Samoa's most iconic attractions lie on these remote islands, from the nation's tallest peak Mt Lata to what's often described as the most beautiful beach in the Pacific, Ofu Beach. Hiking volcanic peaks, discovering sites steeped in Samoan legend, and engaging in Samoan traditions make up the rest of your stay here.
Like Tutuila, there's plenty to explore in this island group, so you'll need at least a couple of days to comfortably experience it. Check out our Trip Ideas category for pre-made itineraries, including accommodation suggestions at the end of each day as you explore the islands.

7.Fitiuta Lodge

Despite its remote location, Fitiuta Lodge can't help but surprise travellers with its modernly developed and maintained lodging on what feels like the edge of the Earth.
You'll have seven affordable "Matai Deluxe Rooms" to choose from in the Maluimauga Fale, or you can treat yourself to one of eight modern and luxurious "Oceanview Ali'i Suites" in the Maluatia Fale (both accommodate one to two guests). There's also a two-bedroom standalone house with a full kitchen and living room that gives you complete independence.
We love that all the essentials come free—air conditioning, high-speed WiFi and those stunning views of the surrounding villages and airport. The lodge takes care of your transfers too, providing complimentary airport and wharf pickups, plus they'll help coordinate alia boat transportation to and from Ofu.
Every morning starts with a continental breakfast, but here's something special we discovered—if you're staying in the Maluatia Fale and your visit falls on a Sunday, you'll get to witness an authentic umu cooking demonstration followed by a traditional to'ona'i meal (it's an experience you won't forget).
The lodge also offers laundry services, a spacious lanai and living room for relaxing, plus an on-site convenience store, ATM and rental vehicles. Lunch and dinner are available upon request if you don't feel like venturing out.
Whether you're looking for a unique getaway or want a base for exploring both Ta'ū and Ofu-Olosega, Fitiuta Lodge is a top choice in the Manu'a Islands.

8.Va'oto Lodge

Last but by no means least, Va'oto Lodge has an unbeatable location on the edge of Ofu Beach.
This charming family-run lodge sits within spacious gardens, directly across from the beach and island airstrip. You'll have easy access to excellent snorkelling at Ofu Va'oto Marina Park (snorkelling gear included).
The lodge provides transfers from the wharf if you're arriving by boat. All units are basic yet comfortable with ensuite bathrooms.
Self-caterers can purchase food from the well-stocked pantry and fridge, or enjoy reasonably priced meals and drinks on-site.
We love that guests get complimentary use of bikes, snorkelling gear, books and board games, perfect for exploring or relaxing during quieter moments.
If you were looking for paradise, but don't care about having all of the bells and whistles, then you will have found it at Va'oto Lodge.
